Education of girls at TNNS has decreased child marriage in Margao<\/h6>\n

Child marriage and early child bearing is common in the slum communities of Goa such as in the Fakir Band area of Calconda in Margao. The Trust of Nano Nagle School (TNNS-Goa ) encourages the families of the girls from the slum communities attending the school not to get married at least until the completion of their education in senior secondary school.\u00a0To date, the marriage of a total of 30 girls is\u00a0known to have been postponed by their families until they achieved completion of studies in grade\u00a0X.<\/p>\n

Change maker cases:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. One of the student’s\u00a0marriage was postponed until she obtained a\u00a0B.Com degree and a job thereafter. She is now 21 and is an accountant in Grace Cardiac Hospital, Margao-Goa.<\/li>\n
  2. Another student\u00a0is currently pursuing\u00a0a degree in M.Com and plans to get married after the completion of her studies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    Student confidence and self-esteem<\/h6>\n

    After graduating from TNNS-Goa, one of the students\u00a0attended the\u00a0Rosary College of Arts and Commerce at Navelim, Salcete in Goa and stood first in the examinations for a degree in B.Com. He is currently preparing for the All India Entrance exams to obtain an MBA. His sister and elder brother also former\u00a0students of TNNS-Goa, are\u00a0pursuing a degree in M.Com in Goa University.<\/p>\n

    Towards sustainable development<\/h6>\n

    After the completion of grade Xth exams, seven students at TNNS pursued\u00a0trainings in Nursing. Of these, three are currently employed at a local\u00a0hospital and three are undergoing additional two years training in General Nursing at a Charitable Hospital in\u00a0Dharwad, Karnataka<\/p>\n

    Immediate transition of TNNS students to college after graduation\u00a0: 2009 – 2016<\/h6>\n

    We consider the students attending TNNS as catalysts of development in Goa. TNNS offers the space for the children of the slum communities in Goa to pursue higher education and to\u00a0become\u00a0skilled and educated workers.<\/p>\n

    This is how we contribute to achieving truly sustainable development conquering poverty and marginalisation.<\/p>\n
